Recipe: Immune Boosting Turmeric Orange Smoothie

If you live in the Toronto area, you’ll know that quite the cold/flu has hit the city (we’re talking regular flu here)! Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who has squeaked by, or you’re one of the poor souls like yours truly who was hit like a ton of bricks!

I was KO’d for a good 3 days. I’ve since survived and have resurfaced to bring you this post! One of the keys to my recovery was definitely this yummy and refreshing smoothie along with cups of turmeric tea, water, Chinese rice tea, soup and of course, as much sleep as possible!! I quite literally slept for an entire 24 hours.

But back to the smoothie. This smoothie is amazing because it’s packed with vitamin C, has anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties (to fight those flu and cold germs!), is anti-inflammatory, contains a good serving of fibre and protein and has no added sugars! It’s especially nourishing when you’re low on energy.  Smoothies are wonderful when you’re under the weather as they’re easy on the digestive system which allows your body to focus on healing.

Refreshing & nourishing

Now we always hear how Vitamin C is good for us when we’re sick, right? Well, it’s not just an old wive’s tale! We have to be sure that we’re always replenishing our Vitamin C levels as it’s excreted from the body within 4 hours of intake and smoking, stress and alcohol speed up this process even more. It’s an essential vitamin with antioxidant properties and is extremely immune boosting as it helps with the production of white blood cells which aid the body in fighting infections. It’s also important to note that sugar and vitamin C both compete for uptake in the body so when we’re sick or stressed it is key to avoid sugary and sweet foods. This is often why we don’t crave these things when we’re sick!

Some great sources of Vitamin C include oranges and mangoes which we have in this smoothie but also limes, lemons, grapefruits, bell peppers, broccoli and Brussels sprouts to name a few.

This smoothie also has healthy fats from the hemp hearts for an omega-6 and omega-3 boost as well as spinach for a good dose of fibre.

Give it a try and as always, please comment below to let me know or tag me on instagram at #happyhealthcc. I’d love to see your creations!
