My Favourite Travel Snacks

The first half of this Summer has been a challenging one to say the least. I lost 2 people very special to me yet we also welcomed in a new little pup to our home (our first puppy!) so it has been a bittersweet last few months. Given that, I took some time away from the constant hustle and bustle to reconnect with what’s important to me, reflect on what I want to put out into this world and the focus of Happy Health.

Part of that focus includes continuing to develop tasty Nutritionist-designed recipes that are well-balanced, high-protein and act as a long-lasting source of energy.

Although I love to cook and craft up new recipes, that isn’t always possible and this was especially true when we took our mini vacation earlier in August to Somewhere Inn in Calabogie as we didn’t have access to a kitchen plus it was a bit of a drive (about 4.5 hours). So naturally, I took some time to brainstorm a few travel snacks and meals that required no cooking, travelled well and did not require a fridge. My focus was on sourcing high-protein and high-fiber snacks as I find those are often the categories that are most lacking during travel.

I’m pretty sure our pup enjoyed this vacation more than we did!

So without further adieu, below a some of my latest favourite high-protein snacks for travel:

  • Cloverleaf Bistro Bowls – I was skeptical about this one to be honest but it is surprisingly good and offers 14g of protein. Pair this with some instant bone broth for a total of 31g of protein which is what I generally aim for. We had these post-hike at room temperature and  I also had a handful of nuts for extra fiber and healthy fats.

  • Bone Brewhouse Instant Bone Broth Packets

bone broth is extremely nutritious and contains the amino acids L-glutamine and glycine which are very important to gut health. I love that these are instant packets which makes them a super easy, no-cook way get an extra 15g of protein in. This was tasty and we often had this alongside our sammies!

  • Beef/Bison Jerky – as with almost everything, have these in moderation but this is a great protein option to have on-the-go. Brands such as Meat Chops, Thrive and Beretta are brands with better ingredients.

  • Collagen Powder – the Organika brand has been a staple for years. Collagen powder travels well and is so easy to mix into a morning coffee, smoothies or oatmeal (use code HAPPYHEALTHCC25 for 25% all orders)

  • Nuts & Seeds – try pre-shelled pistachios, macademia nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, pre-shelled sunflower seeds for an extra dose of fiber and some protein.

  • Hard Boiled Eggs – each egg offers 6g of protein, these can be meal prepped in advance and stored in the fridge.

  • High-quality Cheese – in this case, look for artisan brands that use grass-fed cows and have undergone the traditional cheese-making process vs commercially made brands. Bonus points if the cheese is also made from raw milk for extra nutrients.

  • Protein Powder – this is a staple in my household. I mixed this into our morning oatmeal while in Calabogie. My current favourite is a plant-based chocolate flavour by Good Protein (use code CAROLINE28248 for 20% off your first order)

Before we hit the road, I also prepped a few sliced or baby cucumbers, sliced bell peppers and threw in a bag of baby carrots and a few apples which all travel well and are great to have alongside eggs or jerky while travelling.

I’d love to know of some of your favourite travel snacks and comment below to get the conversation started!
